Inhibition Effects of Nitric Oxide Production of Solvent Extracts fromResidue of Omija (Schisandra chinensis) Juice
Lee Jin-Won

Abstract
Omija (Schisandra chinensis) fruit is a small round-shaped and red fruit from the Omija tree that is high in a variety of gomisin A, gomisin N, schizandrin, and lignin. Omija fruit has an anti-effect as well as reducing effects on hyperlipidemia. Accordingly, this study examined the cell viability, such as cytotoxicity and inhibition of nitric oxide production, of Omija juice residue extracted from various solvents [H2O, 50% ethanol (EtOH), 70% EtOH, 95% EtOH]. The cell cytotoxicity and anti-inflammatory activity of the Omija juice residue extracted from EtOH were investigated using an MTT assay and an evaluation of the inhibitory effect nitric oxide in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells. The MTT assay showed that the RAW 264.7 cell viability of the EtOH extracts was better than that of the H2O extracts. The solvent extracts of 50% EtOH (2,500 ¥ìg/mL) showed potential inhibitory activities on the nitric oxide activity in RAW 264.7 cells. These results suggest that the EtOH extracts and 50% EtOH extracts from the residue of Omija juice have anti-inflammatory activity.
